On the 3rd engine, what next?

Hey everyone,

I'm somewhat new to the forum, been browsing the site once in a while. I dont own a toyota, but have owned 4 subaru and currently own a Legacy GT 2006 White on gold rims!

Anyways, to get to the point, my dad owns a 2001 Corolla Automatic. Today, well the worst thing could happen... the engine died on us (I get a ride with him to work). I know they are bad if they run out of oil...

My dad had to add 2.5quarts more oil to the engine, and yet still died on us, it was knocking bad, as in real bad... and after about 10-15mins of trying to get as far as possible/closer to home the engine went!!

Now, its going on the 3rd engine, what can we swap in there (bolt-on) that could be more reliable? Would we have to change the ECU and stuff like that? I am really good in mechanics, do my own on my subaru's and worked on my dads car and brother VW...

So questions is, what engine can we replace it with? Only 99-02 engines? What can be done to prevent the engine to die, its the second time it has happened to him that the engine was knocking real bad... and boom the engine went!

Thanks, we need solutions, its the car we drive to work!

03 - 08 Corolla engines don't seem to be plagued with the oil problems some (many?) 98-02 engines have. Do a search here for details on what sensors you need to swap from the 01 motor to the new motor. You'll keep your intake and exhaust from the 01 engine. 2000-2008 head virtually the same "long block" 98 & 99 share the "short block" with the later VVTi 1ZZ engines.

^ That's a long winded way of saying put an 03-08 Corolla engine in this time.

Never, NEVER, let the oil get that low.

So we would have to miss match heads and block together in order to make it work?

If this was a subaru I would know all my solutions, but this is why I'm asking here!

So anyone know what engine is "bolt-on" other than the 99-02 engines? And what is needed to swap another 1.8L engine in there... Sorry i dont know all the engine names, i'm not really educated on toyota's!

Thanks
JP

I really think your father has issues with his maintenance or lack there of.

Changing oil and keeping the motor full of oil is the lifeblood of a motor.

If he can't keep the oil changed every 3k-4k miles and check the oil level regularly he shouldn't own a car.

Sorry, but that is the way it is.

WOW!!! I have never heard of anyone going thru 3 engines in this car! Well w/out the proper maintenance anyways. From what I know, there really isn't any bolt on swaps. Just the 1zz-fe will directly bolt on. I have to say tho, if you want to do a swap, just go and get another car, the amount you would spend on the swap, you would spend on a good beater. The 4A would fit, but then you would have to get a 7th Gen ECU. So you're better off just gettin either another car or a 1ZZ.
