How to change idler pulley on 2000 Toyota Corolla?

I have a 2000 Toyota Corolla that squeaks. I figured out I needed to change the belt and also read the idler pulley is a cause of the squeak. After changing the belt it still squeaked, so I took the belt out again and looked at the idler pulley. The idler pulley has a little give when I hold it with my hands and shake it so I figured I'd change it too. I ordered a new idler pulley but I can't figure out how to change it. I spend days/hours searching the net. Everywhere it says it is an easy job. I popped the car off (pic 01) and saw what is holding the idler pulley (pic 02).

Do I need a 'special' tool to remove the idler pulley?

I think you would replace the entire tensioner assembly. The idler pulley is part of it. You shouldn't need anything more than standard hand tools.

I'm no expert but if the idler pulley cannot be removed from the tensioner then why would shops only sell the idler pulley by itself?

I used a reflective surface so I could take a better look on how to remove the idler pulley. After running some more searches it looks like I need a Torx bit to remove it. The idler pulley has female star (6 corners) shaped bolt. I'll go to the store in a few hours and buy it. I'll keep everyone posted.

If you're going to the parts house, get a haynes, it gives the best step by step installation and removal process. Good luck to you.

Here is an update: I was able to get the pulley out with the Torx size 50. Everything is just tight so you need some good leverage on the ratchet. The new pulley I got from Gates goes in but after I tighten the bolt, the pulley doesn't spin. I guess not all aftermarket parts are made the same.

I then went ahead and ordered a whole tensioner/pulley from Toyota and was able to change it without lifting the engine. The AC line that gets in the way has some give so just push it down and the long bolt holding the tensioner then can be removed. It took me about 1 hour to do the job. It just takes a long time to screw/unscrew when you can only turn 1/8 of a turn each time with a normal wrench.

So, now the car has a new tensioner/idle pulley and new belt BUT it still makes the rattling sound! Dammit! Any suggestions on what could be making the noise or how to find out?

There is no noise when I turn the car on without the belt, so it has to be belt or one of the pulleys, right? Everything looks tight though.

I would guess the power steering pump or water pump. I find a mechanics stethoscope to be very helpful in locating the source of rattles.
