stuck brake pedal

i was at ikea's yesterday, and there was one lady who couldn't start her car, because her brake pedal was stuck! it sticks completely to her car floor.. she tried to call some mechanics, but they were all closed: sunday. she was so desperate. you must see her face & her cellphone sticking to her ear! oh boy, i was, and still am, so upset for her.

q: do you guys know how to fix this problem please? thanks

Something doesn't add up.

Sorry to say this, but if it's not you yourself encountering the problem, why bother? I'd understand if you feel bad for her and out of curiosity want to know how to fix this so you can be of some help.

It's Sunday; of course the majority of mechanics would be closed. Even Canadian Tire are not guaranteed to have mechanics on duty on Sundays.

Our cars are not designed to have its brake pedal stuck to the bottom. Nor would such sticking prevent a car from starting, auto or manual. In manual, it's the clutch pedal that has to be FLOORED to start; in auto the pedal doesn't matter when starting; you need to press the brake pedal down to shift out of park. The most that can happen is she would not be able to move (if the pedal linkage is stuck, keeping the brakes applied), or worse, have no brakes (if there's a brake leak, and the brake booster failed, and/or some pedal linkage snapped, allowing the pedal to freefall to the floor). In either case she needs a tow, and you won't be of any help.

I'm sure Bingo didn't mean to offend anybody. Just here in America, we don't really "feel" any emotion for other ppl that we don't know, making you "nice". Unless you're a woman... no offense to the women of TN. But you're absolutely right Buurin, she would definately need a tow, unless you're like me and keep your tools (not all, just the basic wrench set) in your car and have the right ones.

there are some automatic car that DO require the brake pedal to be depressed to start the vehicle. the first that comes to mind is newer bmw 7 series. now in the origional post it does not specify the make and model of the lady's car. but there are cars out there that require the pedal to be depressed. mostly german from what i have seen and worked on.

but other than that, you are spot on Buurin. there really is nothing you can do for them, other than calling for a tow.

Strange problem. More than likely would have been a fault with the brake master cylinder which caused that to happen. It could be faulty or completely out of fluid. Another possible cause could have been the brake booster, but typically that only works once the car is running. Other than that, the only other thing I can think of is a bad/broken/corroded linkage or bushing. Hope she managed to get it fixed.

Why in the world would you care about this woman unless you where trying to get in her pants ? A random stranger has car problems... as long as she is safe and a phone I'm on my way. Seriously, I'm sure her husband/boyfriend/mechanic will help her out. No need to be upset over it.
