Question 98 Rolla engine tick

Hey guys, maybe y'all can shine some light on something for me. I have done my research about this but came up with nothing. My engine seems to have a pretty good tick, intake/exhaust valve, possibly a lifter? More so when in high revs. I have come across some threads here on TN, but those threads still never got a solid answer. I asked a local wrencher and mechanic, they both said that the 98 1ZZ non-VVTI has always done it. I'm just curious if anybody else's has that same tick (NON-VVTI). My engine has 120,000miles (give or take, more give than take), I burn the norm 87 octane, I use Valvoline MaxLife 5w-30 full syn oil, I don't have forced induction, strictly N/A. Thanks in advance.

I have a 2000 with VVT and 125000 miles on it. I have had it since new and it has been very well maintained. It has developed a slight tick or knock.
My mechanic said just to keep driving it, he asked me if it used any oil and it hardly does.

I know the belt tensioner can be noisy and it almost sounds like valve or lifter noise, maybe that is what you are hearing. I know these engines of this generation are known to be on the noisy side, but will run forever if they are looked after. Hope this helps.

yep i have one. i hear it when
1: i start getting low on oil and the the valves make this sound like the engine is pinging all the time (annoying)
2: the VSV. if my oil is full its usually the VSV. since i have a intake this thing is extra noisy.
