Air Conditioning?

So, my corolla is a little on the older side - 2002 with over 100K miles on it. I don't know why but my air conditioning does not work, and for some time now. I haven't paid much mind to it since I've gotten so used to putting my windows down. Now, some people are telling me to just buy Freon and have it put in..and then there's the other side where people are telling me that it's not possible for the car to just run out of Freon and that the car must just have a leak. I don't want to pay massive bucks for something that could be just a simple fix-up, but I would love it if I could finally have some air conditioning going on in my car.

First thing to do is start the engine with hood up and AC and fan on, see if the compressor engages.

Then you want to add a can of freon with dye in it so you can find the leak with the uv light. Then you will know if it is the compressor or something else. my a/c started to not cool as good as it used to so I added a can and after about a month now, i checked out under the hood and found that everything was good under the hood except for the compressor- it was glowing green. Now I know what needs to be done. can of freon was like $8 and light was $12 I believe.
