clutch and gear shifting 2001 Corolla CE manual

Toyota Corolla CE 2001 - 5 speed manual transmission
97000 miles.

My question:

I can shift gears from 1 to 2 OR 2 to 1, when parked and without using the clutch pedal? Is this ok?
I can NOT change gears from 3 to 4 or 4 to 3 without using the clutch when parked.

Also while driving the car, i can bring the car from gear 4 to neutral or gear 3 to neutral WITHOUT using the clutch pedal.
I can NOT do the same when the driving the car in gear 1 or 2.

Is the clutch or the transmission ok? How much is this going to cost?

so much wrong here... syncronized transmission. while you can get in and out of every gear with out using the clutch and rev-matching, it DESTROY's the syncros and ruins the transmission. my advice to you: use the clutch...

Taking the car out of gear won't destroy the synchros but why would anyone want to do it? FWIW Coasting is illegal in most states. Trying to get back in gear without the clutch and a PERFECT rev-match will seriously shorten the life of the transmission. As far as not being able to get it out of 1st or 2nd, the lower the gear you're in, the harder it is to find neutral throttle (neither accelerating or decelerating).

Changing gears while parked (with the engine off)...some gears will go in others won't...it's the nature of the transmission. Gears need to be able to align to mesh and if the output is held by the axles and the input is held by the engine there's no way for the gears to rotate enough to mesh.
