My motor popped. Any N/A build up help?

So yea something went catastrophically wrong in motor the other day I have an 01 prizm with a 5spd. It had 117k on it with the normal missing oil syndrome and i think the previous owner wasnt particularly caring and did some pretty good damage to it so I just kept putting oil into it until it made a horrific noise so I stopped driving it. A of late I have been to busy and a little lazy to pull out the motor and find out what really happened to it but I think the top end is pretty chewed up. It clatters bad so I presume the cams and cam journals are shot. and since I dont feel like doin a stock rebuild I was curious if anyone had any direct hands on experience internally modding a 1zz. I was thinking about going with a slightly higher duration cam 272/272 and .396/.396 lift. along with a 11.0:1 82mm pistons (more girth for the missing oil issue) I was going to go with higher performance valves, springs and retainers for a higher revving motor if I decide to go there. along with the obvious bearings seals and gaskets. Im not out to make huge gains in power just more pep in its step along with a good solid rebuild so I know where im at with my motor.

So really I am just looking for any input on my possible "mods" and any first hand experience with the 1zz what to watch for maybe simpler ways to do something.

TIA for any help.

If you want a little more power gain maybe drop in a 2ZZGE? If they will be able to go into your Prizm. Maybe a 3SGE since those are rated better than the 1ZZFE.

1st off 3sgte engine is a VERY complicated swap for the 1zzfe engine.p the engine is too big and a lot or re-routing from the engine to the truck type of stuff including the battery. Get some forged pistons, connecting rods, change your timing chain, change all gaskets, pulleys, and ball-peen the crankshaft. This would probably help out a bit. If not and you have good credit, Toyota has some pretty good cars for sale...

get an 03+ rolla engine and drop it in with the ecu for VVT (does 01 have vvt?) and just run with it. better power band with the plastic mani and a little better engine.
2zz swap is expensive.

yea its the vvt i really dont want to go with a swap becuase that defeting the purpous of rebuilding a motor so I personally know what has been done and what hasnt been done. I set a budget of about 3k to do this. I dont want to get to far ahead of myself with the crank only becuase there expensive. If the crank is still scuff free (i hope) im going to leave it. Otherwise I an just goin to buy a knifecut and balanced one. Im not lookin for a huge power gain. Just a good solid build with maybe a little extra oomph for my little prizm. im a little tired of my old lady just whoopin my ass with her 2.2 lude. its like almost fair until she hits that magic RPM then I just cry lol.

So to re explain what I want is to REBUILD my motor with a little more power no boost no nos just a little higher compression and cams. I am lookin for someone who personally disassembled and re assembled a 1zz and knows it well.

I appreciate the input although not all of it was what I was lookin for

MWR built an NA 1ZZ for someone with around 180whp and good torque for 91 octane pump gas. look around for what they did to get that and follow suit, you should be able to get some good results.

Yea ive been doin quite a bit of research on mrw and they seem like they got a lot of real legit shit. 180 would be great that way the lude wont totally spank me every time we "race" lol Do you have any ideas where to look for that? I haven't really found much on their site on their personal build accept their salt flat car.

but you can use those parts as a guide line for what parts you need to get and you need to do to your engine to get its power output increased.

sweet thanks a bunch I dono how I didnt find that thread maybe im google handicapped or somthing. from that parts list the only thing that differs from what I wanted to do was I planned on using stage 2 cams instead of stage three. I am glad to see that they are still willing to work with the 1zz. I like non traditional builds better then swaps. Like every dildo that puts a 5.0l in a ranger instead of building a turbo 2.3l or a s/c 4.0l unconventional is way more fun.

Thanks again for the help I really appriciate it. hopfully in the near future I can start a build thread here now.

guess not, i picked the complete built engine (~$4k), then all the higher end options just to see how much it came out to.
