You'd get more power with a straight through exhaust with no catalytic converter, but depending on the regulations where you live, it may be illegal to remove the cat, in which case you'd have to go for a cat-back exhaust instead.
Here in New Zealand it's not a legal requirement to have a catalytic converter so I ripped mine out and replaced it with an 18" resonator instead. Now my system comprises of headers and front pipe (4-2-1), 18" resonator (4-inches thick), 2" exhaust piping, 10" resonator (2-inches thick) and a high-flow Dynomax muffler on the end.
I put the resonators in purely to keep the sound down and to eliminate any raspiness. If you go with a cat-back system then you won't have the need for an 18" resonator as the cat basically acts as one large resonator and takes care of any raspiness on its own. You can upgrade it to a high-flow cat if you like, as this will aid in the exhaust flow.

so something from the cat sounds like what i want to do. do you know of any sites that sell these parts at a reasonable price?
I'm not sure of any sites that sell them for the 8th gen sorry, as I'm on the opposite side of the globe. There are a lot of cheap ones on eBay for the 7th gen, but I couldn't see any on there for the 8th gen. I'm sure someone will know though

This is totally off topic but i also wanted to ask about headlights. As if right now my headlights never shut off, they stay on ALL the time and besides having the car off. Even if you turn the knob on the left side of the wheel it still stays on no matter what, what do you think is the issue with that?
just get a universal magnaflow muffler and go to an exhaust shop. ask them to build you mandrel bent catback exhaust, i have 2.25" piping on mine....
your question is a little unclear (your headlight stay on even when car is off?). your headlights are DRLs, you can't shut them off when car is running unless you cut a wire, there is a DIY for that.

yep. I put a magnaflow on with stock piping and that made the car loud. Then I got the rest of the piping done without a resonator and now my car is even louder (unfortunately). but it sounds good.

You live in CA? Then forget about doing exhaust modifications. Just forget it haha. Not only do you need to keep the cat in, your cat is more regulatory than the rest of the US. Also, changing the exhaust, with a catback or axelback such as the TRD will make it a bunch louder (especially bassy) which is also very illegal in CA.
The exhaust on the Corolla is already pretty much as straight as it gets. The replacements follow the same path. So you can't really upgrade it. Plus, increasing the diameter of the exhaust with these replacements tends to hurt your performance rather than increase it. Speaking from experience here. Your best mod is a cheap intake. And this will not add HP, only improve throttle response and help it breathe easier. Speaking from experience again.
