Need to replace rings

I have a 2000 Toyota corolla with 150000 miles with the 1ZZ FE engine.

I bought it new,and have always done the required maint., and oil and filter changes at 3000 miles(dino oil).

Its always been a great car , and still is, its just burning an ungodly amount of oil(started about 20000 miles ago). I want to keep the car, but I cant stand the oil burning anymore, so I am going to put new rings and if it needs it, pistons also.

I have done some research and have found that many others have had the same problem.

The question I have is: Should I use original Toyota pistons and rings( will the problem just come back with these parts) or is there another later/better designed piston and ring combination( Toyota or other)?

Ialso read a post here by Bitter that mentions using +03 pistons and rings from Toyota.

Both Bitter's post and another by Toyota tech? suggested that the engine was designed to run on low sulfer fuel and that the rings were worn out early due to our high sulfer fuels here in the US.

I am a mechanic so doing the work will not be a problem , but to do it right I need more information.
Thanks for looking, Sam

Sam, I do not have a definitive answer for your question but I (and many others) would love to hear if you do end up fixing it. If it were me, I would go with the parts from an 03 or 04--all stock, no aftermarket.

There is a nice rebuild post by a fellow named Randini. Be sure to read it, too.

Thanks teppista881

I am going to rering/ piston it within a few days.

I got some good information from one of the members here ( Bitter) who told me that Toyota has replaced the old problem pistons/ rings with somthing better.

I hope the new type look different from the old so I am not getting new old stock( the same problem again).

Thanks for the link to the rebuld too. Sam

The engine is out(needed a new clutch too).

Engine is fairly clean, but oil rings rings were stuck on 3 of the pistons( clogged with carbon).

I am going to replace the pistons, rings and main and rod bearings.

I cant beleive how long these japanese engines last , there was almost no wear on any of the parts

I honed the block and polished the crank, and am now waiting for my parts( all Toyota).

I got good ones of the stuck rings, but every thing else is cleaned and ready to go(to be put back together) . I will post pictures of the reassembly and installation if you want. Parts wont be here until the 7th of aug. Sam

You have to register with a site like photobucket.com, upload the pictures there, then use the "embed" features for posting directly in the forum. It's a little tedious but each step is easy by itself.
