Look into custom that brace if it ever does anything. Fold down is such a practical feature to have.

I don't usually link to other forums, but I remember reading a tutorial on how to do this a little while ago. I'm not sure if the 98/99 shape is the same layout in the rear as the 01 but have a read of this:
I did a 60/40 folding rear seat conversion on my 7th Gen Corolla about a week ago. It was fairly easy, if you get your measurements and markings correct. All you'll need is the brackets, latches and hooks for the side cushions. I'd use stainless steel bolts if I were you, although for the bolts that aren't exposed to the elements then zinc will be fine. Was definitely worth doing.

Yeah that's strange. It's the opposite way around for the 7th Gens. Mine's an SE Limited model which is second highest model you can get (the 1st is the GT model with the 4A-GE) and it had fixed rear seats from factory. All of the base models I've seen have folding seats. Doesn't really make sense...Unless the folding seats are meant to make up for other features that the base models never got. Interestingly enough, the GT model came with the folding rear seats, which is what I have in there now. Would have been easier and more practical if they did it for all models.

How similar is it for the 7th gen? Could you do a DIY on the 7th gen thread like in the link you provided.

The procedure is similar to the 7th gen but there are differences such as the way the seats latch in place. The brackets appear to be almost the same however. I could do a DIY but I didn't take any pics during the install. I do however still have all of the measurements etc for the alignment of the brackets and could explain everything, so feel free to send me a PM if you're interested and I'll type something up . Adam (ASG14) is doing the same swap in the very near future so he may write up a DIY with pics, although I'm happy to help in the meantime

To put your seat cover on, you'll have to remove the bench seat by pulling up on each side so that the clips disengage, slide it out, remove the bolts down the bottom which hold the backrest in, lift the backrest upwards so that the three hooks disengage, and then pull the whole thing out. As for your question about how hard of a job it is to make them fold down, have a read of the link I posted near the top of the thread, everything is explained in there

Doesn't even the LE only have fold down levers in the trunk? When I look in my VE's trunk I can see two places in the frame where the levers would have been had that piece been used for an LE.
That's the only thing I don't like about my Rolla. I'd really like to get a Matrix next time for the hauling space
