Catalytic Converter

Hey guys, I am pretty sure my catalytic converter is shot and i need a new one. i have a constant rattle under my car and it is the worst when the car is idle and gradual lessens as i increase speed. Anyway, i was wondering how much it would cost to replace on average. I just want some ballpark numbers before i go to the shop.

Thanks

If your cat was shot then you would probably be getting a Check Engine Light coming on and staying on. If thats not the case then it could be a heatsheild coming loose somewhere, might just wanna jack the car up and take a look before you waste money on something you don't need replacing right now.

Jack up the car and check your heat shields. Over time, the bolts on mine have rusted and fall off causing rattles. I ended up removing all of them.

The check engine light has been on in my car for as long as Ive had the car (it was a pass me down from my dad then brother). It doesn't seem to go off even when I fix everything causing it to illuminate. And is the heat shield a straightforward fix?
