What is the "recommended" tire PSI?

Just bought a used 98 Corolla.
Was wondering, what should the PSI level be?
The tire its got on only shows "Do not exceed 45 PSI".
The User Manual does not say anything about PSI levels.
I know every car is a little bit different, so what should be the correct value?

It should say by your door. 28-32 I think for a 4 cylinder.

I checked the label on the door, it does not say anything at all!

I run no less than 36 PSI cold in my cars, for slightly better MPG, and because anything less I consider low. Some people like lower pressures or going by what the door tag says, for a smoother ride, and because they think the tire will "explode" if ran at slightly higher PSI than what the manufacturer calls for.

Probably ~32 for best tire wear and ~37 for best fuel economy. I keep mine at 38 cold psi

Also, as a general rule if you like higher psi's stay at least 6 psi below the maximum amount listed on the side of the tire.

This is based on my experience with stock rims/ tires
