New to manual transmissions

I recently purchased a 5 speed 2002 toyota corolla.
I have never previously driven a manual.
The car works very well, though I've noticed some weird things, which just may be due to me never having driven a manual before.
Sometimes, it feels as if the RPMs are inconsistent. It feels as if sometimes RPMs will rise very quickly (shoot up 1500-2000 rpms for no apparent reason), while other times it seems normal, even when applying the same throttle pressure.
The clutch has never been replaced, and the car is at 80,000 miles. Could this be due to some clutch slipping?

Does there seem to be any pattern in the high idle? Turned on accessories, kicked on the AC, etc.?

Are you stepping on the throttle when this happens? Was the car in gear at the time or in neutral?

A slipping clutch manifest by the car being in gear, adding throttle seeming to have no affect on overall speed - ie, RPMs rise but no change in ground speed. Classic sign of a slipping clutch.

Sounds like the car is OK, just need to get used to it.

Takes some getting used to.

I like automatics better. More convenient and easier to drive (I'm lazy ). Under certain circumstances tho, manuals can be a lot of fun. But most of my driving is better suited for an auto.

I owned a manual little 4 cylinder domestic vehicle last year. At first it was fun, but grew tired of it eventually. Jerked too much and I had to be very precise in order to achieve a smooth ride.
