Can anyone out there tell me if there is any difference at all between the first gen 1zz-fe block and the later (vvti) models? The piston rings are very weak in my 1998 Corolla (200k miles) and I am looking into replacing the block with a performance shortblock from MWR as long as my stock head and all accessories will bolt up.
Thanks!
Jeremy
there are a few depending on if its for a corolla or celica. is this going to be a stock shortblock? if so then is it for a corolla or celica?
the main differences is the crank vr wheel (position sensor wheel) it is different. if it is a stock block the celica has lighter weight cast rods, the corolla has stronger powder forged rods. pistons are the same. crank is the same. head will bolt on with no problems other than having to swap out the sensor wheels.
They do not specify what year or model (celica or corolla) the block is. My biggest fear is that there will be some random water jacket / galley that doesn't match up with my current head, or the accessory mounting will be different. If this block will work with my stock head, I would be THRILLED. Thanks!

Your best bet would be to contact MWR yourself and ask.
That is the only way to make sure.

Thanks. I did call MWR a few days ago and he was unable to verify the differences in the vvti and non vvti block. however, i didnt think to ask him what vehicle their blocks come out of or what vehicle they are designed for...
Thanks, Milky! Just to clarify, as long as MWR's block is designed for the Corolla and NOT the Celica, I should be good to go?
yes. the difference is all in the heads. all the head castings are all the same for the 1zz. even vvti or not. the non vvti just did not have the vvti solenoid hole and corresponding supply lines to the vvti actuator machined from the factory. though if you look at the head you will see the boss for the actuator.
now here is my question, how come you are just ordering a 2k engine block instead of just rebuilding yours? you can order a complete engine rebuild kit from rockauto.com for 400 without timing chain kit and oil pump, and 750 with the chain kit and pump. it could save you some much earned money in the long run, and the end result is the same.
Honesty... time. But, you have me second guessing, after all that is a massive difference in price. The advantage of the MWR block is that it has warranty and 11:1 forged pistons. *sigh*

yes the MWR block is nice, and so is 11:1, but the gains from 11:1 will be minimal (5-9hp) since the engine is on a stock ecu. it also means you would have to run 89-93 as well. i run nothing but shell 93 in both of my cars so it doesnt matter to me. nothing wrong with it, i was just wondering if you had weighed all your options before jumping to buy a $1800+(after shipping) shortblock.
Good looking out, and I have decided to rebuild. I had done some math and figured the gains from 11:1 to be more in the ballpark of 14 whp (I have 2 spare SAFC's laying around (DSm owner...) so I could do a little tweaking). At any rate, the rebuild is a go and I will be using the kit without the chain and pump from rockauto. I may or may not grab a set of 11:1 pistons if I can find a good deal on them out there and depending on how much, if any, the cylinder walls need to be worked. I do have a bit of piston slap at cold start in the mornings, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the walls are in good shape.
Milky - you the man!
