Auto 4 speed transmission slipping, what options are there?

Hi guys,

My 98 4speed auto seems to be slipping quite badly as of late. The car has about 190k kms on it now. The previous owner had changed the fluid at about 120k. I changed the fluid when it initially started slipping and also added 1/2 a bottle of Lucus Tranny fix. It helped a little but not too much.

Also in the beginning the transmission only slipped if I accelerated heavily from a dead stop, but now it seems to slip anytime when the engine load is abruptly increased, in other words any time I foot down harder than light acceleration. I've noticed it definitely slips more when the AC is on.

Is the transmission toast, or is it salvageable? Would changing the tranny fluid and filter make any difference?

When you changed the fluid, did you pull the pan down and clean out the filter screen? Possibly the screen could be partially clogged and causing slippage.

The last time was a drain and fill only. I didn't take the pan off.

Would a tranny flush help clear up the screen, or should I just take the pan off the change the filter screen. I am really hoping that is all the issue is.

sounds like the seals may be going, form what you are describing, that may not require a complete overhaul but the case still needs to be opened, does it happen when the transmission is cold and then as the unit heats up does it slip less?

I don't feel a flush would help you in your situation. If it were my car I would be really curious to see what the filter/screen looks like.

The tranny seems not to be slipping any more, I think the Lucus needed more time to do it's magic. However, now I have a new problem. I did a engine shampoo over the weekend, and now the car seems to be running terribly. What is the usual issue that comes up after rinsing down an engine? I did take the precaution to cover up electrical connections.

The issue is, even with the car in park as soon as I give it some gas, the engine starts to shrug.

Had an similar issue with my TJ back in the day, turned out to be one of the sensors around the throttle body, could it be a similar problem in the corolla?

Checked the code, came up as P0304, misfire cylinder 4.

You probably got water down the spark plug holes - or your wires are shot, got water in the little micro cracks and caused the misfire.

I ended up replacing my wires when i had the same issue and it was fine.

Exactly what had happened. I ended up changing plugs and wires and all is well.

Hey just thought I might say you may have the slippage again. A lot of the additives out there just swell the seals which will work for now. I would recommend getting it looked at or have the pan pulled to see if there is excess clutch/ seal/ bushing material in the pan.
Seen this all the time when i rebuild transmissions.
