found a few threads where people did this on 7th gen rollas but has any done it to an 8th gen?
Sounded like a cool weekend project. Just looking to have a button that lights up when the key is in the "on" position, push the button, car starts.
take out the key, car stops. nothing too fancy.
Anyone know what wires to splice and cut? I'm not very experienced with ignition systems. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Do a search for remote starter install instructions (Bulldog is one that comes to mind), they usually have a wiring color code chart on their sites for the wires you're looking for given your specific year and model.

which wires need to touch to turn the engine over? I guessing if I know that I can know which ones to connect. Also which wire would be used to light the button when the key is in the on position? I know literally nothing about this stuff so I appreciate your patience.

What's your thinking as far as how this is going to work? You put the key in and turn it to the "ON" position, the light comes on in the new start switch, and you push the button to start the car? If so, do you also want to be able to still start it with the key too or do you want the switch to only start the car and turning the key to the start position does nothing?

I want the first one. I want the button to be the only thing that turns the engine over. The key is only there to unlock the wheel and keep the car running.

Given how you want it to work, it would be a matter of cutting the wire to the starter (red on the chart you linked to) at the ignition switch (leave some slack in case you want to go back to using the key at some point). Tape off the end that goes to the ignition switch, and connect the other end of the red wire (that goes to the starter) to the new start switch wire. The other wire from the start switch needs to be spliced into either Acc1 or Acc2 as I believe both go hot when the key is turned to the "on" position.

The switch should also have 2 wires for the internal light. One wire is connected to a good ground, the other is connected to Acc1 or 2, just like above and the light will come on when the key is turned to the "on" position and the Acc wires go hot.

ok I've got an honest question.
Why would you want to touch the starter wire with one of the acc wires? From what I can tell those go hot when the key is the the "on" position but probably aren't meant the carry the ignition load.
Why wouldn't I touch the starter wire (red) and either of the ignition(black/white or black/yellow) wires?
When I say "touch" i mean the act of pushing the button (which just touches the two contacts)
Now I could see using the acc contacts to turn on the button light, but don't understand using acc to start the car.

this will be the button I use unless I can find one at a local car parts store. Either way the contacts will be the same.

Apologies, and good catch, should have written Ign1 (black/white wire) and Ign2 (black/yellow wire), not Acc... It's been a few years since I've done a remote starter install and had Acc stuck in my head instead of Ign. as those wires power accessories like the blower fan, etc.

Ok so EITHER one should work in reference to the ignition wires? or one specifically, or should I splice into both you think?

I wouldn't splice into both. If you have a DVM (volt meter), when you take it apart to do the install, probe the Ign1 wire when the key is first turned to the "on" position and see if it's hot (12V) right away. If so, use that one, if not, try Ign2. Some cars have an internal delay built in on one of the Ign circuits to reduce the load on the battery when the engine is being started, and you just want to avoid wiring into the delayed one if your car has that feature as you'll turn the key to the on position but have to wait 5 seconds or so to be able to start the car. Yours may not have that feature, but better safe to check for it when doing the install.
