New Engine Ideas (02 Corolla)

I recently blew the engine in my 2002 Corolla S (5 spd man, 117k, 1.8L VVT-i) and am thinking about maybe not replacing with another VVT-i because of the problems I've experienced/heard about. I wanted to know what your guys' ideas would be for a slight upgrade of an engine, while not going out of line with the price (I'm a student working minimum wage). If you could add any kind of model/part number with your engine suggestion it would be appreciated.

Here are some pictures of my car:

Thanks in advance!

well it looks like your working with a small budget so a replacement 1zz from a newer corolla is your best bet. what problems have you expirenced? and a better question is how did you blow your motor at 117k? ran low on oil?
