Thinking of adding a short ram intake

My friend suggested me to add one to gain a few extra horsepower. He says $50 is enough to get one. I dont know anything about modifying etc... but is this a good idea? I heard shortram intake is not good cause it could draw in hot air sometimes and reduce power instead of gain power? Is this true?

Also will it increase my mpg if im running rich atm?
