I had this problem with my corolla 2001 i hear a sound coming from the belt serpentine that stops when a move the wheel steering. i took the car to my mechanic he advice to change the belt and the belt tensioner . i did but the sound did not go away.i change the belt tensioner myself because i was sure the sound i hear was coming from the tensioner shock I was wrong. I hear the sound now louder but can figure out where is coming from. another mechanic suggest to change the water pump.I search the net i only find people with the same problem but not solution.I took the corolla to the dealer I paid $110 for the diagnosis but the way they said i get credit if i will fix the car with them. they find out that i need a new power steering pump $675 power steering flush 145 ,battery serviced $50 and clean injector $195 . I could believe that i had to pay that much for an old car fix. I went to an another mechanic to change the power steering pump he did for $ 125. Te noise from belt went away. my advice don't pay the dealer i huge amount of money for and old care i do the job yourself.
