Blown engine

first, i'm not a very experienced with cars, and i'm currently learning.

after running around a few days, engine has died on me and my friend suggested that we should stick another motor in it.

I was wondering what motor is good for speed/reliability.

i'm currently 20 and we have all the equipment in my friend's dad shop to do the work,

so what motor should stick in this beast?

- not planning to turbo charge
- speed is always good

assuming you have a 98 - 02 corolla i can tell you it is not a super simple pull and replace ordeal. I am a master tech and it still tested my patients a lot replacing this motor. Either way from what research I have done. is you are pretty limited to the 1zz motor. You can go with a slightly newer 1zz out of an 04 like I did but you will have to either swap out the intake manifold or swap air boxes and tubes. the exhaust manifold is a must swap theirs no way of crossing over with it. If you want to go as far as rebuilding the motor look into monkeywrenchracing.com you can get a bit more power that way. Hope I shed a little light on your situation

Ya!! get some bigger, high compression pistons, sleeves, valves, a performance crank and cams from monkeywrenchracing and get that put in while the engine is already out!! this is what i wanna do to my 1zzfe eventually! I wanna see how one runs and how much power it puts down with all this.

these are the cars its in:

ST230: 2000-current Celica
2000-current MR-S Spyder
1998-2000 Corolla (nonVVT-i)
2000-current Corolla (w/VVT-i)

you could do the vvt-i and you would have to change the ignition system, wiring, and ECM
I heard a good swap is a 2004 1zz with ecm
Do they do emmision testing where ur from? Cause some celica swaps might make you not pass that.

i saw a forum with some guy having a 2ZZ engine.. but a lot say its not worth the money for such little power gain..

i might just rebuild the motor with high compression and possible tune it a bit for better handling..tracking with this beater here i come!

there is emission testing, but it isn't very strict

Ha ya i've heard of stuff like that. I have a freind from Cali that was telling me go big or go home and that i should put a 3s-gte engine or a mustang 5.0 in my corolla. He was gonna ship the engines to me if i bought them. I was like hell noo haha. That would be soo much work. Supposedly they do crazy shit like that over there in Cali tho haha.

Are you serious? The 2zz is rated at 180 hp and in these light cars they'll fly. It's about 40-50 whp over stock with way mor mods avalible.

^^^ not to mention people are making great numbers and still na. and the swap is down to about 3000-3500 if you do it your self. hell just having a c60 in the car made a HUGE difference with mine.

and no you are not limited to the 1zz or even the zz family. the chassis uses 3 of the 4 mounts for any of the a series engines. with minor fab work you can have any a series engine bolted in. the only thing left would be wiring. which is not hard to figure out. uses the stock axles with any of the a series engines. with a 2zz swap you would need newer celica/corolla axles. i opted for the equal lenght half shaft setup from the celica.

There have actually been a few 3S-GTE swaps in 8th gens that I've seen. Around 4 or 5 exist, all make big power. Not for the faint of heart or those with shallow pockets though.

Not that I mean to come across as argumentative, but I don't think this is accurate information. We replaced my 98 1zz bottom end with the bottom end from a 2006. Here's the thread: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/sh...75#post3134975

We had the motor out four times and had it down to about an hour for the pull. Honestly, for us, the biggest PITA was the bolts in the exhaust manifold collector....right there above that donut gasket?... wow...man what a pain.

So to summarize....we are still using the 98 ECM and ignition...had to swap one of the cams and the crank position sensor wheel...a couple other items... but it's running great. About 15k on it after the swap now.

Cheers!
Jon
