standard transmission a problem?

I've read here and elsewhere that 9th generation corollas have a flaky standard transmission with bearings going south in short order. Is this a problem with 8th generation? I'm looking to buy a used corolla and plan to tow motorcycles occasionally. I'd like to find out about the transmission problems. Oh, I don't want an automatic. Thanks for your help

Doesn't seem to be that common on 9th gen Corollas, only a couple have had transaxle bearing issue. There was a redesign of the syncros for the 2004 model Corolla transaxle. The 2003 models were noted to have grinding / hard to shift issue for some.

The 8th gen Corolla has a very similar transaxle, but with a different final drive (taller, so RPMs are lower at a given speed). AFAIK, the 8th gen Corolla transaxles were essentially trouble free.
