Check Engine Light On

I drive Toyota corolla 2000. I almost always fuel at Costco. On the weekend I had to go for a 1000 miles journey. So, I fueled a gas station on the highway. After fueling, the check engine light came on. I just stopped and checked the fuel cap and found to be alright. It was still on. I thought it was due to the quality of the Gas. After that I had to fill up some other place. After about 100 miles it went off.

Why this low quality fuels are out there? How to take care of them? If low quality fuel is there, would filling up premium fuel solves the issue quickly?

It's doubtful that it was from the fuel. More than likely you seated the cap when you checked it and the light cycled off - or you have some other problem. If it doesn't come back on, you are good to go!

Were you topping off the tank( did you add more fuel after the pump cutoff ) to get extra milage? If you were this can cause raw fuel to go into your evap canister and ruin it ( very common in this gen of corolla). Have you check for any codes?

Might want to get that CEL scanned, could be just coincidence that it popped on when you refilled off the highway. Better to know for sure than just guess at it.

Since it cycled off - probably an EVAP code that sam333 is alluding to. Pretty common on the 8th gen Corollas and generally will not affect driveability or fuel economy - assuming it was an EVAP code.

I never top off. It was only the fuel. I've had this problem in the other cars as well. I live in CA, can I go to autozone or similar places if my check engine light glows again?

I have never heard of bad fuel causing the check engine light to come on, there is no mechanism for it. Unless the fuel was so contaminated, it caused the engine to run poorly and then the codes popped up, but you would have probably noticed poor performance. Auto zone and other such places used to check them for free, but you can buy a cheap code reader for under $30.

I haven't seen in Toyota. But a couple of times I got it in GM car and GM truck. GM's manual says it could be bad fuel and you have to almost empty your tank before refueling the tank full. It went off after refueling the tanks couple of times. Bad fuel too makes your Check Engine Light on and it takes a while to go off. I dunno what's the code for that one. Let me check with Toyota Manual.
