a I just bought a 2000 toyota corolla, and I am trying to find out if it has a alarm. the owner gave me a alarm remote. this does not set off any beeps or lights. the dash near the front glass has a clear plastic bubble with electric board. also ther is no security light on the dash. any ideas.
That could just be a remote lock/unlock. Check under the hood in the corner near the steering wheel for a siren horn connected to the battery. If you don't have one, you probably don't have an alarm.

A lot of folks with nicer or newer cars don't like holes drilled into their dash, so they opt to leave the flashing alarm warning light out of their system. If you got a remote, there is a good chance that you have some kind of alarm. Like has already been mentioned, check for a siren under the hood. That's a start. But there are so many ways to hook up an alarm or not hook it up. Some people don't want a siren, some don't hook up the flashing lights, etc. But you probably have some kind of alarm OR remote start. It would certainly help to see a CLEAR picture of both the remote AND the thing on the dash. With those pics, I can probably help you figure out what you have. Maybe find the brand of alarm. It sounds to me like the previous owner (or someone before them) installed the system themselves and may have left a few key features off. OR... the battery in the remote could very well be dead. Easy to test, just pop it open and check it with a multimeter.
Just a wild guess, but I'm thinking if the "bubble" on your dash is near the glass, it could be some kind of glass breakage detector (if it's not the receiver for a remote start. I'd love to see a picture of it. Then I can probably tell you what it is. How many buttons on your remote?

Sorry for the bad description of a bubble. It is round and a clear plastic. You can see a circuit board under the plastic bubble. I think it is a sensor of some kind. Also the remote has 4 buttons. There is a siren mounted on the frame inside engine compartment. I think maybe the remote is talking to the alarm. does anyone know how get these two to talk?
Do you have a hard-to-see toggle switch near the kickplate under the dash where the driver's left foot would be? That's where my alarm got installed. The toggle switch turns it on/off if you have the key in the ignition.
Yes! Replace the battery in the remote, and push the top left button and once it arms, it should talk. But ONLY if it has that feature. It's a very annoying feature you won't like once you get it working. That feature is not in the alarm, it's in the siren. You can buy sirens that do that. Instead of doing a warning chirp, the siren talks. Depending on the siren, it will depend on what it says, but most say "Please step back from the vehicle" if someone gets too close but ONLY if you have a proximity sensor. I highly doubt the thing on your dash has anything to do with whether it talks or not. It's probably a glass breakage detector, OR the remote sensor for a VERY cheap alarm.

What is meant by "talking alarm" is just that the siren speaks in a voice, like saying "Armed", "Disarmed", "Step away from the vehicle", "Warning", etc. Here is a little bit better description of the talking alarm:

That "bubble" is for the Twilight Sentinel feature of the headlamps/interior lamps. I kicks on the headlights when it gets too dark. Sometimes when you pass under a bridge or duck into a tunnel, you can see the lights kick on automatically, that is due to the light sensor (circuit board) under that plastic bubble.
Are you certain the alarm is actually hooked up / hooked up correctly? Trace back the wiring on the siren, see if they are connected to something. I've seen more than a couple of "alarm" systems that have the underhood siren, but the wires are not connected to anything at all.

Hey, I just learned something new! Never knew about that light sensor. Makes sense to me!
And I agree that something on the alarm isn't hooked up OR the remote battery is dead and won't arm/disarm it.

ok i learned somehting new. the light sensor on the dash wow. ok rplaced the battery in the remote no luck. micro push switch on kick panel left side. pushed switch and this didnt do anything.
when you lock the doors the light on the dash goes off. the light goes on when door is opened with the key. this seems to be driven by the dome light. the ignition is not cut out when the doors are locked. i tried by sitting in the car locking the doors and started the car. also when you bang on the windows with your fist or insert the key the light on dash goes off. my theroy is that the alarm on the car is just for glass breakage, but i cant figure out the remote i got with purchase of the car.
well i finally saw a picture of a remote for my year corolla. the one i got when i purchased my car is totally different. not even close. should i buy another remote and see if this works for my car alarm. might be a safe way to go. or i was thinking of stopping by toyota dealer and try getting info from parts guy.
It would be great if you can still contact the seller. They may have accidently gave you the wrong remote and found that one of theirs isn't working now. They just might have your remote still and not even know it.

Call the parts department of a toyota dealership and give them your vin number. They will tell you whether or not a factory alarm came with your specific vehicle.
