Aftermarket Aluminum Skid Plate

Hi there, I'm new to the forums. My wife owns a 98 Corolla, but she isn't really into the car club thing, so I'm posting on her behalf.

This evening, another vehicle forced her out of her lane and onto a raised median. So far, the butcher's bill is 2 wheels, 2 tires, and a tranny pan. It's still unknown if there was any damage to the tranny itself.

Heaven forbid this should happen again, but is there an aftermarket skid plate available to prevent/limit under-body damage? I know these aren't 4x4s or rally cars, but it seems like they're popular enough to support this type of mod. My Passat had one, and my lowered Subaru has one. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

to my knowledge there is not one produced for our cars. that being said, you could build one for not too much coin. just mock it up using a large piece of cardboard. cut the cardboard to size, shape, mounting spots and include access spots for things like the drain plug and oil filter. once your satisfied with the cardboard unit. transfer the design onto a piece of metal of your choice and cut it out.

if you do make one, be sure to document the whole thing. take lots of pics and come back here and post it. i would love to see one made and im sure other on here as well would enjoy it.

I figured I was SOL. I shouldn't have a problem mocking one up and posting a CAD drawing; it's finding the time that's the hard part.

Quick update: A new tranny pan was fitted to the tranny case, and ATF continued to weep out. The weep was caused by a fractured transmission case, so we got the insurance company involved. The adjuster totaled the vehicle, as there was additional damage to the suspension and body under the car. We took the money and are shopping for a used Outback or Forester; need more room for the baby-on-the-way.

Anyways, I strongly suggest that others look into an aluminum skid plate. It probably would've saved the transmission.

Would you like to know where to get one?
