oil burning

Hi, I am new here. I have a 2001 prizm which is a corrolla with a chevy name. mine has 199000 mi. on it and uses a qt. of oil every 500mi. I read the post about oil burning and here is my 2 cents. I have tried all kinds of additives to no avail. I bought this car a yr. ago from a guy who told me that it"s been using oil since 75k. what I do is add oil when it gets a half a qt. low I don"t let it get to low. I also use lubromolly Mos2 at an oil change which I believe has kept the oil use constant, it has not gotten any worse since I have had it. the problem is worn oil rings, so nothing that can be added to the oil is going to cure it. the car stiill runs very well as long as I clean the plugs every 3000 mi. I do enjoy reading this forum and hope to get some good info from you guys or gals. thanks, mike.

The only way to fix oil burning is to replace the rings, end of the story.

^^^ What he said.

There are no magic potions that will fix it. Essentially the engine is worn out and needs a rebuild if the oil is not leaking out. I've seen 4 bangers go longer, but 199K is still a TON of miles.

Sad to say, with a 10 year old car that has almost 200,000 mile on it, it probably won't be cost effective to repair it. You should probably just retire it and get something else.

I don"t think I want to do that, the thing still runs good, overall a good car, starts everyday, gets 3o to 35 mpg. been very reliable, I buy oil on sale. a qt. of every 2 wks is no big deal. keeps me from having to drive my good truck in the winter.

I'll agree. Best thing to do is keep driving it at this point.

Soon you will need to replace your cat converter and o2 sensors.

I've read that some people have noticed a slight reduction in oil burning after switching to synthetic.

Get your money's worth out of it, keep driving it, it could very well run another 100,000 miles as long as you babysit the oil level.

The OP should not bet on it.

Maybe you should see how much you could get for it if you junk it. Eventually the oil burning will smoke so much, that drivers driving behind you will be blinded by the smoke.

i have a 01 prizm and find it does the same but i check the oil every time i fill up my tank and it seems to be fine. do that and you should be good..also check your valve cover gasket...i just changed mine made a hell of a differance. stupic things like that will make it burn oil
