My 2000 Toyota Corolla DIED On Me =[...Junk It or Repair It???
Here's 2000 Toyota Corolla Story
So recently my 2000 Toyota Corolla Died on me...It was very sad to me, because it was kinda my first car. It was pass down to me by my late grandfather & it holds a sentimental value to me.
Anyway...so on 2010 December 30 a day before new years eve my trusty 2000 Toyota Corolla took it's last breath on me. I was going on an 9 hours drive road trip to Virginia for the holiday. After 2 hours & 100 miles away my car started make this really scary clicking sound when I would Idle at a certain speed on every gear.
That was when I'd pulled over to check out what was wrong with my car. I found out that I was running with low oil...which had me question how because I recently had my oil change 3 weeks before. apparently the place either never gave put any oil back in my car, they did not put enough oil in my car, or my car had a bad oil leak.
Anyway...I went and got some conventional oil from a gas station & put it in my car. I'd start the car again & let it settle, after it started to sound better...I put out on the highway and started heading home. Just a couple miles of going home the engines started acting up again, but it was way worst this time. It made like a heavily Clunking sound & it even vibrated the car...It was just like Heavy Clunk, Clunk, Clunk dropping up and down...then one final CLUNK!!!! the then I was coasting on neutral for as long as I can to the side of the road. After that my car did not even crank up anymore.
=[
I had to pay $350 to have it towed back to my house & now it just sitting there looking all sad with no life =[
Anyway so that's the end of my story...Would anybody know what is wrong with my car & how I could fix it???
Because of this recently event is why I'm starting to get my foot out the door to go learn more about car in general...I feel everybody should know all about what they are driving. I knew I should have took some kind of mechanic class when I was younger
I'm currently on this hunt for this used RX8, bout to check it out tomorrow & test drive it. hopefully there's nothing wrong with me...cause I recently learned that RX8 is prone for Engine Flood, Oilburned, & its famous qoute "A Redline a Day Keep The Mechanic Away", because of how it squirt oil into the engine to lube it up.....I'm going off topic but yeah that's for a different post.
If the car is otherwise is good shape, an engine swap will generally be cheaper than selling the car and getting another one. Especially more so if the car holds sentimental value.
Depending on the extent of engine damage, might even be possible to rebuild the existing engine, though cannot say for sure until you get the engine torn down to evaluate its conditions. From your description of what it was doing before it died, sounds like it has completely seized - suffered some catastrophic engine damage.
That case, would be easier to start with a known working donor engine and go from there. Also chalk this up to experience - before any road trip - check all fluids and tire pressures, after any service work is done to the car, double check their work - if parts were replaced, ask for the old parts back.

Be thankful that you were able to pull safely off the road and access how much you really like this car and go from there.
If the car means that much to you and you like it alot and intend to keep it for the next few years then I would get a good used engine out of a 2004-2008 Corolla as these years did not have oil consumption issues. If you are mechanically inclined this is not a difficult procedure just as long as you have an engine hoist.
