exhaust problem hopefully?

my 99 corolla is yet again giving me an annoyance. i wanna try, and explain this right, but i don't wanna sugarcoat it either. i don't wanna sway anyone into thinking it's more serious than it is, and i also don't wanna make it sound any better than it really is. i am pretty sure it's been doing this for years ever since i bought it 3.5 years ago in july of 2007. it's been over 50k miles since so i guess it can't be too big of a problem. sometimes it seems like it's getting louder though. i am getting a SLIGHT rattle behind the glove compartment. i think thats where it's coming from. when i pop the hood i can't tell where it's coming from. it sounds like it's coming from where the exhaust manifold meets the motor. what i am hoping is that it is not a valve or lifter tap. i have heard taps before, and they are louder, and much more pronounced than this one whatever it is. i saw a video on you tube a few months back where someone was asking about a motor tap, and it sounded similar to that. i then noticed it while warming the car up one day.

my best friend is annoyed at me for asking so much. he says it's a bad gasket in the exhaust, and told me not to worry about it. in the 30 years almost that we've known each other, and 28 years we been driving he's always been like an old school mechanic that your parents or grandparents tell you about from the 50s. the mechanic who would replace one thing, and if it didn't fix it, then move on to the next possible thing. thats how he is with his own vehicles, and has always been like that. i watched him just a few months ago put in $700 bucks in parts in his blazer before finally fixing the right thing. and that wasn't the first time he has done that before either in all the years we've known each other. he did work on small engines professionally for years. lawnmowers, motorcycles, tractors, and even small boats. he's not the greatest auto mechanic though i'll say that much. so rather than take it to a mechanic who would probably charge me, and say i needed a new motor anyway even though i probably don't i figured maybe someone else has had this problem. i've had taps in company trucks i've driven before, and even an old 68 ford pickup i had back in high school.

i think it may be an exhaust issue maybe a leak because when i'm on the highway the decibels seem to go up when i'm giving it gas. when i back off the throttle the noise quiets. it's driving me crazy, and i'm hoping to sell it soon or maybe even try to get another year out of it, and i really don't wanna sell someone a car that has motor problems. i've also done some research, and people seem to say toyotas are well known for having taps though the taps do not mean anything is wrong, and they've compared it to ford's noisy steering box, and that it's an annoyance, but no problem. i've heard though it's more common in the newer vvti motors. by the way the car has got 177k miles. this noise i need to stress is not very loud at all. in fact most people probably would not notice it. any help is appreciative. i did record the noise on my phone, but it made it sound A LOT worse than it really is so i deleted it, because going by that it sounds like i got real problems so no use in putting it up here. sorry for the long post.

Change the front exhaust doughnut and the exhaust manifold gasket and see what happens.

disable the fuel pump, run the engine till it dies, plug the exhaust with an apple or potato, spray the exhaust with soapy water, crank it for 2-3 seconds, look for the bubbles.
