It wasn't difficult, but you have to place everything back the exact way you found it. (overhead cams/sprockets, timing chain). They are not hydraulic, just "spacers."

They are inverted " buckets" with shims that sit on top the the valve and spring. There is a special tool that you can get from Toyota that enables you to remove the shim from the lifter without removing the cam shaft for valve clearance adjustment. Much easier than removing the camshaft and having to reinstall the cams, bearing caps, gears and aligning timing belt.

On a 2001 the shims are not removable from the bucket style lifters. If you remove the lifter it has a number engraved on the inside that you can cross reference in a repair manual to determin what size lifter you need to replace it with. What you will need to do first though, is use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance. If everything is in spec then you don't have to replace any of them.

I have a '98 Prizm that we bought with 223K miles and nothing was out of spec so I'd be surprised if you needed to swap any out. I had to swap a bunch out on my '99 when I replaced the head though.

Oh thats right! I'm using shimless lifters from the 2001 MR2 Spyder with the 1zz.(my cardomain link) They fit my 3sgte head on my MR2Turbo. They're 30% lighter and no shims to fly off at high RPM's.
Only downside is , if you need to adjust valve clearance, the cams must be removed .
