engine wont start after changing spark plug wires.HELP!!!!

2 days ago smoke started coming out of the steering wheel i thought id take it apart to see where it is oming from i got the book i took the airbag out then realized i do not have the tool for taking the steering wheel off so i put the airbag back on( before i did that i took the atery off for 30 mins.) after i put the airbag back on i thought id take a look at the spark plugs while i took the spark plug wire off it turned out that two of them are burned to ashes. so i replaced them i turned the car on everything worked perfect. but when i tryed to start it it wudnt. the engine would shake violently and die. so i got brand new spark plugs and replaced those too and still the same thing. can you please tell me what i have to do to make this car work again.i NEED AN ANSWER asap. PLEASE!!
thank you.

to the forums! Which model of Toyota do you have? I'll move your intro thread to the proper Corolla forum when I know the model year.

Welcome!

All the best in solving the problem. I hope it turns out to be something simple. If you let us know which model you own, we'll be able to move it to the appropriate forum so that other owners can help you out

Best of luck, and enjoy the forums

sounds like you got the firing order wrong on your spark plug wires. 1 & 4 should be paired on the first coil pack (furthest from the firewall) 2 & 3 should be on the other coil pack.

Not necessarily, firing order that is messed up will have the engine firing at wrong intervals - some cars will start and run poorly, some will just crank and crank and never fire - all depends on the engine and how badly the firing order is messed up.

Hence the recommendation to change one wire at a time, or take a pic before you strip the wires off. Double check under the hood, I know on my Camry, there was a firing order diagram under there.

cyl 1 is the furthest, 2 is 2nd furthest, 3 is 2nd closest to the packs and 4 is the closest.

as viewed from the front of the car

passenger side | ( 0 0 0 0 ) <- engine/ plug holes| driver side
passenger side | ( 1 2 3 4 ) <- engine/ cylinder #'s | driver side

on the coil packs as you look at them, the plug wires for 1 & 4 go on the front coil pack, the plug wires for 2 & 3 on the rear coil pack.

make sense now?

Firing order is 1-3-4-2, the way you have them wired, is 4-2-1-3. I'm surprised that is even tries to start.

The way Milky described should work, if it doesn't, then move #1 and #4 plugs to the rear coil pack (closest to windshield) and #2 and #3 to the front coil pack.

Here is an illustration on a 2000 Camry, which should be mechanically similar to your 1998 Camry (same generation). Realize that you posted your topic in a "Corolla" sub-forum. No worries, as many people here have experience with Camrys as well.
