Pick up a haynes repair manual at your local auto parts store for around $25.
But the basic method of aligning your headlights is this:
Find a flat, level surface to park the car on with a flat wall to point the headlights at. Pull the car up close to the wall. Put a piece of tape vertically on the wall at the centerline of the car. At the headlights, put a piece of tape horizontally on the wall at the centerline of your headlights. Pull the car away from the wall in a straight line about 25 feet from the wall. Make the necessary adjustments from there.
If you also need to do horizontal alignment (quite likely), when you're putting up piece of tape on the wall for the headlights, also put up a vertical piece of tape along the horizontal piece so that it forms a box at the inner edge of the headlight. Proceed with the alignment as stated above.
I hope this is clear enough. If you need I can draw up a simple diagram.
EDIT:
I forgot to mention, the late 8th gen models (2001 - 2002 model years) have a dual bulb setup and actually have an adjusting wheel to aim the headlights vertically. They can't be adjusted side to side without repairing fender damage or using shims (washers) on one of the retaining bolts.
