2000 prizm 1.8 Toyota engine help please

My son cooked the engine in his 2000 chev prism with a Toyota 1.8 engine in it. I put another engine in. It starts but will not idle, backfires through the exhaust and the exhaust will get cherry red if you run it long enough. I have put in new plugs and a upstream O2 sensor. I am getting codes for random misfire on all cylinders. It is a 2002 engine with 40,000 miles on. It seems like it is getting to much fuel or that the fuel is just going into the exhaust. All plugs are firing just not at the right time. i have changed coils and injectors but am lost as to what to do next. I would really appreciate some help from you knowledgable Toyota guys. I am a Ford truck guy myself. Thanks. I put a post on the Camry forum and was told to paste one here .

Sounds like you could be running excessively lean (too high an exhaust temp) or the timing is so far off you are dumping raw fuel out into the exhaust (late combustion).

Assuming you tried to swap in another ECM (one from the 2002 Toyota)? Was the donor Toyota engine known to be a running part? If the donor engine jumped a link in the timing chain or the original timing was goofed from a bad repair - that could explain the headaches that you are having now.

The 2000 Chevy Prism engine "should" be identical to the 2002 Toyota Corolla - though there are some electrical differences. I know that others here have used the later 1ZZ-FE engines to swap into their Prisms without too much issue.

Timing is controlled by the ECM, if that is not timed right (firing order is different than the Chevy ECM), you won't be able to fix it without replacing the ECM. I'd start off with the easy stuff - see if a sensor was left off, damaged or shorted wiring - especially from the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors.

re. 1.8

Thanks for the info. The ecm is what I have been thinking about. We have changed all the sensors and cleared some codes but it is still getting too much fuel and firing wrong. I ordered a factory set of service manuals yesterday. That will give me all the info on checking everything. if everything checks out it would have to be the ecm. When I do find the problem, I will post the answer here so if maybe someone else has the same at least it may help them. Thank you for your info though,i didn't think anybody would answer.
