Your best bet?

Go to a salvage yard. Try to get an engine from the 2001 and 2002 1ZZ-FE as the earlier models are slightly different in their arrangment. The 2001-2002 models (don't remember if 2000 is included on this) added the VVTi variable timing which improved fuel efficiency. 2000 + went distributorless (separte coil on plug's for each cylinder) and changed the position of the engine within the bay (intake is toward the front of the car, oil filler cap on right side of valve cover, PCV valve on rear right side of valve cover).

I've been able to find a refurbished 1ZZ-FE long block motor on eBay for about $1300 including the $200 freight. If you want a refurb, that's about the best price you're going to find. But you're probably better off just getting a lightly used one (< 75K) from a salvage yard.

all 1zz-fe from 2000-08 will work (matrix, vibe, corolla)

some miner sensor swaps are involved, but everything else is directly plug in and play.

it's about a 2 day job if you are familiar with the layouts under the hood

as far as engine source goes, check with local salvage yards, you have a wide range of cars you can get the engine from. however, i do suggest you pick from 03 or newer 1zz-fe, the older ones are known to have oil burning problems

I wasn't sure if the 9th gen engines were changed any from the late model 8th gen's which is why I didn't suggest it. Never did study the engines of anything but the 8th gen's so that's a good bit of info to have...

My 2000 Corolla and 2004 Vibe engines are virtually identical.
