Turn signal

Sorry for making another thread....

I have a problem with my turn signal (the handle that you press up or down to make your blinker/signal light up).

What do you guys call this switch/handle?

When I push it up to make it blink to the righ, my blinker arrow lights up...but when I push down, there is no light or it something clicks very fast. But im aiming toward dead.

So when I slowly push it down ..not all the way down but maybe 1/3 of the way and held it in place by itself there...the blinker works and my left arrow blinks.

I image it might be a bad connector or something ...

if you know what the name of this part is call ....maybe I can DIY repair...i seen guide on how to do this..pretty easy.

Also if there is a guide...plz help me out iwth a link.

EDIT: IT HAS BEEN FIX...LOOK at Last Page

Could be a bad turn signal stalk switch, or it could be a burned out lightbulb / short in the electrical / defective flasher relay.

First verify that when you see the arrows on the dash display come one, do they correspond to the actual flashers lighting up on the car (have someone check the blinkers on the car).

Yes. the left flasher come on when I push it 1/3 of the way slighly downward. I think that the contact is worn out or something.

The dash board with the flash display work just fine. Both of the dasher corrispone to each of the blinker. I am pretty sure it the handle or contact when i push it down.

Just need to know what you guys call the handle so I can maybe find a part and try to replace and see if that is the problem.

EDIT: Thanks fishexpo for the name ...... turn signal switch...lol

now how much would one of this go for at autozone or o rally? any guide on how to do this repair?

I had the exact same problem with mine, just like you described. The problem was in the switch itself. I replaced it with a junk yard part for $30. Works great now. My unit was sealed( no bolts or screws) so I couldnt get it apart easily.

Thank god for a reply from someone who has the problem.

Now can you explain a little bit more if my problem is like yours?. Cause now..when I press the left signal down, no blinker or flasher..just dead...it use to blink very fast and all.

Only way to make the blinker/flasher work is held it down 1/3 of the way until you can see the signal flasher on the dashboard. I have been doing this for 1 year or so. Can you pin point me to a DIY guide? I really wanna get this fix this spring or summer.

Also I think the switch cost over $100 or something......where would i get one cheap...

Sorry for the late answer. I got my part at a junk yard. The manual will give you all the info you need to repace it. You have to pull the steering wheel, then the colum cover and then pull the switch. Its very easy to do. Buy a manual though, it will save you alot of time and money.

Given our description , your problem is in the switch itself. You have the exact problem I had.

Thanks for the reply.

I can't get an answer from a auto salvage and doesn't look like they have any. So my would have to get it at autozone cause it seems a bit cheap there.

NOw for the manual....i saw some car repair manual for like $20 at orelly ...is that it? or do i need to buy the make and model manual?

If i do i will have to save a hundred and hopefully not that hard to do and get it repair this summer.

I never checked to see if auto zone or another after market parts store had them. I am sure that you could find one at the dealer at a very high price. There are alot of 8th gen toyotas in junk yards around here, so I went that route. Not to be preachy, but it never pays to work on your car without a manual, just buy a Haynes or Chilton(for your year, make and model )and that will give you all the info you need.

I check autozone online and they have Haynes manual for 24.99 so i will save money and get one before i do anything.

Also autozone sell the swtich for about $109 dollars ...as for the salvage, i can't tell where to start cause they are not alot around here and I don't know the name of them. My best bit is order from autozone so that I can return if it doesn't work.

Might attempt to do this this spring.....hopefully...

It may not be your switch. I didn't see it mentioned but did you check all of your signal bulbs? If any of them are out you'll get a really fast blink like that.

The other possible problem is the flasher unit. Check that -- it's a $10 part and it's very easy to replace. That's more likely to fail than the switch itself.

The switch from AutoZone is definitely high priced, but it does have a lifetime warranty on it. However, there's a reason electrical parts for Toyota's are so expensive -- they have a habit of not failing. That's why I'm suggesting the flasher unit first.

Did you mean the signal bulb as in inside?

As today, there is no fast blink or blink light turning on when i make a left signal by pushing the switch to my a left turn. Only way to make the left blinker light up is held it down 1/3 of the way. Which I think have to do with the contact inside the swtich to cause this.

Yes all my bulb works inside and outside.

Also what is this flasher unit? do you mean the emergency flasher?
Where to located it and find it and replace it to check if it works? pic would be nice.

as the user above have the same problem as me ...i am 80% sure its the problem, if not I can always return it for a full refund a WIN WIN..

Flasher Unit == Relay (http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...r=6415_0_11714_)

Lots of weird things can happen when one of those stops working properly.

It could be the switch, just keep in mind that if you get it from AutoZone and you plug it in and it doesn't solve the problem the switch is yours. If the autozoners behind the counter are doing their job properly (I say that because I work at AutoZone myself), they won't take it back if it looks like it's ever touched a connector of any sort.

I'm not necessarily saying that it isn't your switch, just offering other possible reasons for the issue. I would suspect your switch too but I'm simply suggesting other things it could be.

IIRC you can change the switch without pulling the wheel, Only the column covers and 2 screws holding the switch. Disconnect connector and pull switch towards you.

Thank for the link. I might try to get that later when i save enough money in couple of months. Weird if you can't return it, cause I return light bulb that i try outside parking lot and swap for another one cause it didn't work.
