Mods and expected HP gains.

If I did the following mods, what HP gain per each and/or overall?

Current mods: 2001 Corolla CE with K & N drop in air filter, Sport Edition by Kosie 14 inch alloy rims and 195/60 Evertrek H rated tires and front strut tower brace.

Proposed mods:

Intake

1) Celica GT intake manifold
2) Celica GT throttle body
(Do I need Celica GT ECU to run either of these?
3) Cold air and/or aftermarket air filter/intake

Exhaust

1) Manifold/Header
2) Downpipe/Header back exhaust, oversized and mandrel bent.

No internal mods. Other handling mods possible include lowering springs, new shocks/struts, upgrade anti-roll-bars and/or rear strut tower brace.

I've asked about all of these mods before, but...over the last few years, I haven't been able to do anything due to low cash flow and no free time. I just want to review all the mods and HP gains expected with each. If I plan to do any of these mods, I'm wondering what sort of HP boost I could see. I'm not expecting a huge improvement, but I was hoping all of the above intake/exhaust mods would get me at least a total of 15 peak HP.

Any thoughts?

thanks in advance,

Fixed. And i'll lay this out for you.

Rant start. You don't want an over sized exhaust. To much is the same as too little. 2.25-2.5 inch Max with out any negative side effects. In a perfect world a low mile 8th gen 1zz with the IM/TB swap, I/H/E should make to the wheels high 120's low 130's. for the sake of arguement now lets throw in a set of custom cams and a Aftermarket ecu and a Tune and i think we can get near 150whp. since your rocking VVT-I those are the options available to you. if you did all that you should be pretty close to this. this guy is on 9thgencorolla. with all mods listed 147whp. end rant. hope that helps

Short of dropping a new engine in there is no reasonable way to make a 8th gen corolla fast.
The corolla was designed for economy, not speed. If you add a bigger exhaust your car will be a joke. Why? Because your car will sound like a go kart and not be any faster.

If you want something to brag about - you can upgrade the suspension to improve handling - new struts and springs. And in the future if you decide to upgrade the engine your new suspension will be that much more enjoyable.

Thanks for the feedback. I think my car is spec'd at 126 HP but I don't know if that is at the wheels or at the crank. Does anybody know what a stock 2001 Corolla makes at the wheels? My car has about 135 K - KM (85000 miles).

I wouldn't go any bigger than 2.25" exhaust, maybe even 2 1/8" if I could split hairs. 147 rear wheels HP is nothing to sneeze at....but, I'm not thinking about doing the cams really, so low 130's at the wheels is probably all I'd look at. I find my car has reasonable power as is, so a modest increase in power would be welcome. Not looking for a drag racing lift wanna be Corollla.

Stock 2000-2002 1ZZ-FE w/VVT-i puts out 125HP at the crank - which works out to around 100-105HP at the wheels, depending on transaxle and choice of dynometer.

Most engine bolts-ons will only see marginal increases in power - to get the most out of those mods, highly recommended to get either a stand-alone or piggyback ECM to tune for those modifications. The stock ECM has some flexibility, but once critical parameters go beyond set threshold, the system will default to a fail-safe tune that will likely rob you of some power.

Like they say, you have to pay to play - engine modifications to yield tangible gains will not be inexpensive. Engine modifications on a highly optimized, fuel economy slanted engine - like the 1ZZ-FE will take a non-trivial amount of time and money to pull off successfully.

Best bang for the buck in this generation are suspension and brake related mods. The car is pretty softly sprung and brakes are pretty light duty given the car's light weight. A simple spring and strut swap, performance friction material, and lightweight wheels wrapped in decent tires - car will handle markedly better while still retaining good streetability and durability for a daily driver. The amount of money here, even just replacing the brake pads alone - will make for a huge difference.

I don't want bragging rights. I wouldn't go large than 2 1/4" exhaust. Anyways, it looks like it is expensive to get gains from this engine. Oh well, perhaps I will shelve power mods for this car for a while.

The main reason I won't pour money into this car is the fact that I have no AC ....so, before I did other stuff, I should swap sell buy a car with AC. I normally don't NEED AC, but I am sick of not having it at least as an option for hot days, of which we have numerous here in Toronto.
