Corolla Tire Size/Speedometer

According to Corolland (http://www.corolland.com/specs.html), the stock LE model comes with 185/65R14 tires, while the CE/VE come with 175/65R14.

If I run the speedometer calculator at http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html, the 185 is 2.2% faster than 175 (or 1.2MPH at 60MPH).

Do the different models have a compensation for the tire size within the speedometer or ECU, or are the speeds different between the two models?

The manual on my 2000 CE lists both sizes, and the Goodyear store lists both as well. I wondered about this too, but I bought the bigger ones. Figured it would improve ride quality just a little.

I've had both sizes. According to my GPS with the smaller size the speedo read a little high and with the larger size it read a little low. It was all so close though that I wouldn't worry about it. I've heard it's the same calibration no matter which tire size.

no. 5 mph difference or less is not a big issue with companys so they dont bother spending the little extra. i know my speedometer is like 3 to 5 mph off idk if that has to do with tires or age or what as i just bought the car. i do know that they are stock size tires though. my ranger is the same way but i have the optional size tires on there.

I wrote in the FAQ here "just go 185/65/14" for everyone. I rest my case.

No compensation in the ECM - both tires would work just fine. The speed error is well within factory specs, speedometer tolerances - so nothing to work too much there.

Keeping in the 14" wheel size - I'd run a 175/65-14, 185/65-14 or 195/60-14 depending on the tires I got to choose from.

For most cases, I'd tend to prefer running a slightly wider tread and lower aspect ratio = wider contact patch, shorter patch to enhance handling and cornering / braking and acceleration. For winter tires - I'd tend to prefer running a slighter thinner tread and taller aspect ratio = narrower/longer contact patch to chew down to through the snow/ice.

I just bought my corolla and it came with 175/65 14's and I also have a GPS and changed my tires to 185/65 14's and it is very close to being right and I would definitly agree to go with 185's or even plus that size one more. At 100km/hr the 175's were about 3-4km/hr less then GPS and the 185 are about 1km/hr less.
