Grinding Noise with pedal press all the way

I just bought a Toyota Corolla 99 CE. Let say I am at stop light. If I put the pedal all the way to the floor when the light turns green it makes a grinding noise. It makes a grinding noise for 2-3 seconds and moves to other gears while doing this. I don't know what could cause this. It only does it if I am starting at 0 miles and put the pedal all the way to the floor. If I put the pedal all the way to the floor and I already have some speed built up it doesn't do it. Any ideas what would be causing this?

Thanks
Evan

Maybe your tranmission is slipping? That's my guess. You might need to drain and refill you tranny fluid with new stuff.

Need a bit more information.

How many miles are on the Corolla?
When did it start making this noise?
What is the maintenance history of the car?
Any modifications, repair work done recently?

Could be a number of things making this noise. One is transaxle issues that Kyle Hamelin pointed out. Another could be the noise from the axles binding up on you, from the engine and transaxle mounts that are excessively worn out. Usually they make a clunking noise more than a grinding noise, but if it has been doing it for a while, it could start making a grinding noise. Launching from a dead stop will put a lot more strain on the powertrain than flooring it from speed - so it makes worn mounts even more likely.
