All 8th gen Toyota engines burn oil.

The problem was substantially reduced in 2003+

the 1zz-fe engine released in the us in 98 was in all 8th gen corollas. as far as oil burning i would take a look at each individual vehicle as they all have the same engine. the oil burning condition is a problem with high-milage engines in which is called 'blow-by'. blow by is when oil under pressure gets bast the piston rings into the combustion chamber....not the easiest repair i might add.

my recommendation is to find a corolla, 8th or 9th gen with less then 200k miles.

This is incorrect as I have a 2001 LE model that drops only 2-3cm on the dip stick after 5000km+ of driving on it. Also my car has 200,000KM on it.

They all( 98-2002) have the potential to burn oil because of the poor piston design. I have not heard of one person running synthetic oil that has major oil burning problems though.

Assuming that you take care of your car, that's barely broken in.

As far I know, the problem of oil burning has 2 causes:

- wrong materials used fot the oil scrape rings.
- oil channels in piston insufficient.

The first problem was solved in 2001 as far I know. The oil burning problem was not fully solved, Toyota re-designed the piston, doubling the oil channels (from 4 to 8). Also heard they enlarged the oil holes. This was done in 2003 as far I know.

There is a TSB for the oil burning, also describing the cause of the problem.

Do you have a link to the info about the rings being the wrong material?

The holes were doubled in number( 4 to 8) and in diameter( 4x the area)also the holes were repositioned from entirely in the ring grove to half in the ring grove and half below (for better oil drainage/flow).

The only pistons toyota sells now are the revised ones , but they only sell them in standard sizes, so if you need a rebore, then you will have to go with an aftermarket brand. From what I have seen most of the affordable aftermarket pistons for this engine have the original small four hole design ( Nippon
Piston Ring sets about a $100). You can always go with high end forged aftermarket pistons( about $500 a set).

[the oil burning condition is a problem with high-milage engines]

My car was burning oil from the start when it was new. I was shocked to find the oil halfway between the Full and Add dipstick marks after a month of driving around 1200 miles.

I have a 1999 CE with the 4spd auto with approx. 171,278 miles on it. the old lady (1 owner) took it to toyota every time for EVERYTHING. I mean EVERYTHING. light bulb? dealer. wiper blades? dealer.

Got the car for $1500.

She was using 5W-20 (well the dealer was) conventional (snake/dino oil).

I switched it to 10W-40 - High Mileage.

I'm pretty damn sure if i put FULL SYNTHETIC (such as Royal Purple or Mobil 1) i'll get an oil leak, as those seals are accustomed to the snake/dino oil.

thus far, i'm getting 34-36 MPG with A/C on half way doing a consistant 80-85 MPG for a straight 26 mile tollway.

i also drive the complete batshit out of it. i got it with 167xxx on the clock.
