Post K&N Air filter question(s).....

Sup everyone...

So i'm debating to just get a K&N air filter for my 99 1ZZFE to get it to breathe better. However, when i match the current filter to the K&N, the K&N looks a lot thinner, even though it "should" sink right into the the stock airbox. it is however... less than half the size (height) than the stock Toyota paper filter.

the filter costs $34.99 I plan on getting a CAI/WAI later (i need tires first). but want to replace the paper one.

anyone have a K&N filter (not the CAI) just the filter on their 1ZZFE? if so... did it fit?

much appreciated!

If the rubber seal to air box mates up then it doesn`t matter how thin or thick it it.They may have a different filter design to stock. If you do decide to get one,and at that price it`s quite cheap($180 odd dollars for 2VZ!),remember to purchase cleaning fluid and oil, both from K&N,and service it when due.

I saw no mpg or performance increase with it in my 01. I mainly bought it so I would not have to buy new filters ever 30k miles which has saved me some money and time under the hood over the years. Don't over oil the filter and you will be fine.

Hello Dave,

I'm glad you're deciding to go with a K&N air filter. Our filters are generally thinner than the paper filter they're replacing because of the filter media we use. We use 4 layers of oiled cotton gauze instead of one layer of paper bent over and over again. This allows us to make a thinner filter that flows better, holds more dirt, and outlasts paper air filters while still having an excellent filtration efficiency.

Just remember it's made of cotton so just like your favorite t-shirt, if you wash it too much it can fall apart. You don't need to clean your K&N air filter for about 50,000 miles, or when the dirt starts to pile up high enough to meet the wire mesh that we use to support the cotton filter media.

Thanks again for choosing K&N!

thanks Matt. I've got a K&N on every car i have: My Nissan Titan, My Nissan Altima, my girlfriends Nissan Sentra, and of course the Toyota.

we use the K&N oil filters as well, with Royal Purple on the altima and sentra, and Mobil 1 on my truck and corolla

I have one in both my Corolla and my Tundra. They both made a positive difference in performance.

You will not see a gain in MPG or much horsepower. Only difference is that you see feel a better throttle response.

This is exactly what I've noticed as well.

unless its a CAI - you're not gonna gain HP. the engine will just breathe better due to increase airflow.
