Air Intake

Hello everybody!

First of all thank you to read my thread and sorry if my English is not very good because English is not my first language!

How can I make a custom air intake for my corolla? I have tried to put a 3'' tube and put a mushroom air filter at the top and I have drilled hole in the tube to put the MAF and the other sensor but the car start but did not run fine and just stop after 10 second. I was asking if it somebody tried to make a cheap custom air intake just for the funny sound of the short ram intake

Also how can I gain more power of my car? Does it have something not expensive that will make me gain some HP? Thank you for your answer

I tried to do like this but it doesn't work, does it have something special to do with the MAF sensor ?

I like the painted intake manifold.

Looks like they pulled the hard plastic hose from the top of the OEM airbox lid and got a K&N cone filter to fit the end. That will be possible if you don't intend to keep the original airbox. In my opinion, it is safer to keep the original airbox for diagnostic purposes, as you'll likely run into problems with your custom intake, during the initial trail and error work.

Modifying the intake in that way will "work", but the issue could be the MAF sensor is now too close to turbulent air. It could through off the readings of the MAF sensor - making the car run too rich or too lean, depending on the air filter choice and amount of turbulence. Likely this, along with a vacuum leak, it what caused your previous attempt to idle poorly.

Don't use PVC piping, if it gets hot enough, it will gas out toxic fumes. ABS or HDPE plastics are better and what the OEM and name brand manufactures use for their intakes.

So i will maybe try it or maybe just clue my maf sensor on a ABS tube will work? I think is because the MAF sensor was not enough sealed. Because if i cut my air box i will not be able to put it back

Trying to get a good seal on the MAF sensor will be the hardest part. After that, you have to verify the inside diameter of the tube is about the same as the OEM rubber tube. Otherwise, the MAF sensor will read the incorrect amount of air.

You'll have to fabricate a mount for the MAF sensor, just copy the original mount and put that on the new tube. Don't try and glue it - as the fumes from most higher temperature glues will foul the MAF sensing wire - damaging the MAF sensor. There is quite a bit of engineering that goes into intakes - reason why the decent ones cost so much.

If you are doing this to learn - that's great. If you think this will perform as well or better than a manufactured intake - highly unlikely unless you have serious fabrication skills and access to specialized equipment. Depending on where you live at - this "custom" modification may prevent the car from passing inspection / registration.
