Need help with MAF

Hey guys I have never cleaned the MAF senor before and have had the car pretty much since it was new (30'000km). Would someone have a picture showing where abouts this thing is? I'm not to familiar with the parts under the hood so I find pictures the best. Also what is the best way to clean it. Any help is awesome thanks!

Here you go. These are pictures of a Matrix, but it's the same 1ZZ-FE engine. The red box is the same as the Corolla's black air box. If you just want to clean the MAF, stop at the 4th picture -- the MAF is that wire inside the sensor tube.

For cleaning, you can get CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner at most auto parts stores.

So to get the MAF out it is that black part that has the screw?

Also after you spray it how long does it need to dry before putting back in?

OHHHH I thought it was the one under the accelerator cable.... So its the part up by the air filter then?

Yeah, air box == air filter box.

The spray evaporates within 30 seconds, so once the MAF is clean, you're done.

Excellent thank you very much for this stuff. Very helpful I will be doing that this long weekend.

Just wondering though. Why do they say to disconnect the battery and the air filter line? Is their a potental to blow the MAF while plugging it back in or something?

Removing the battery ground cable is just a usual precaution when unplugging or plugging any electrical connections. It's definitely needed if you remove the alternator or air bag, for example.

If you're careful you can skip that.

Sometimes it is helpful to disconnect the battery after these sort of cleanings, as it will force the ECM to re-learn new parameters. Not a bad thing, if the MAF sensor was excessively dirty to start with. The ECM will re-learn new parameters without being cleared, but I find the car always seems to run better, re-learn faster if you start with a blank slate, so to speak.

It won't appreciably raise gas mileage unless your mileage was already really suffering due to the dirty sensor.

I dont think my local parts store has the CRC sensor cleaner. I've heard of people using brake cleaner? how safe is this?

I wouldn't use break cleaner.

I see you are from the GTA area. So go to a Canadian Tire and ask for their new MAF cleaner. They just started carrying cleaner that is made just to clean that.

After I cleaned the MAF with that stuff the car has been running great. It really makes a huge difference in the responce from the pedal to the engine.
