2000 CE and oil

I looked at a 2000 CE tonight for my 16 year old and thought it would be a perfect car.Has 121k on it.Owner wants $4k for it which is good according to KBB..Ran great and shifted great sounded good. But, then I came home and read the reviews on the oil consumption issue and am scared to buy it now!I did pull the dip stick and it was at the full mark.Surprised they can hold their value if they have this inherent problem?Any thoughts?

They hold their value because it is a minor problem. For the vast majority it is just enough to notice slightly between oil changes... ie nothing to worry about.

If you lucky enough, it could be a simple fix such as replacing the valve cover gasket. Oil consumption is a known issue for this generation corolla. Some experiences more than other, it varies.

Not all consume engine oil - some with mega mileage still don't burn a drop of oil between changes. Even ones that do consume some oil between changes, their reliability, good fuel economy, and relatively easy/cheap maintenance is why their value still holds.

If you like the car, get it checked out by a garage familiar with Toyotas and especially the 8th gen Corolla and the 1ZZ-FE.

Great first time driver's car - easy to drive, cheap to maintain. Enough power to get along with traffic but not enough to get a young driver into trouble.

thanks form the responses. The thing is with buying a used car like this that may burn oil or have the potential to burn oil is bothersome to me.I read the old post on this subject and people are complaining about putting a quart of oil in every gas fill up or every 200 to 600 miles.the people that are selling it only owned it for 7 months and bought it from a friend whom owned it for 7 years. These folks are moving back to their native counrty in three weeks and need to sell it and they did not put many miles on the car since they owned it.Just drove it around town and took one trip with it which may have been 600 or so miles. Not sure if they even no how to put oil in it?
