alarm causes car not to start

RE: 1999 Toyota Corolla; I'm car-sitting for brother out of town... took it to the store, no problem. at the 2nd store, inserted key and alarm went off... car refused to start. Found the remote in the ash tray and stopped the alarm (thank God!). Car still refused to start. I Unhooked one wire from the alarm, 2nd wire still hooked. Car refuses to start... unhooked battery and cleaned off terminals; rehook up battery, car won't start. Key will not even turn in any direction. Is there a reset somewhere?

Welcome to the forums! Most factory alarms have an override feature. Have a look under the dash for a little button or toggle switch. If you find one, put your key in the ignition and turn it to the 'ON' position, then within 5-seconds press and hold the button until the little flashing LED in your dash goes solid (it should chirp once too if you have a siren installed). This should override the system and allow you to actually start the car.
