Unhappy '98 M5 Transmission Issue

A new issue has arisen... In order to get the car in gear (if I can at all) I have to force it with all my weight and it pops when going into gear. Going into reverse, it grinds real bad. When I do get it into gear, and when driving, it pops going into each gear as I also have to force the trans to shift. It does this when it decides to and shifts smoothly otherwise.

There are several combinations that could cause this (that I am aware of).

Clutch Pedal, Linkage cable, Slave Cylinder/Oil reservoir, Shifter, Clutch/Flywheel...

It sounds to me like the clutch is not releasing as it should - it could be an issue with the hydraulic master cylinder, slave cyl, leak somewhere in the system, or something gone wrong with the clutch itself - if in doubt I'd have it properly diagnosed before pullling the trans to do the clutch.

It only does it now when cold. I drive it for 5+ miles and it shifts smoothly. Thank you for your advise, I'll get it checked out next time I have it at the shop.

When I get back from Vermont, I'm going through and flushing all fluids, and giving it a complete tune-up.

+1
The heavier /cold / thicker oil will make the problem worse.
How many miles on the clutch?
I had the same problem when the center spline started to break out of my disc( also from using after market clutch parts).

Probably OEM with 189K. I notice it only happens when it is either cold, or has condensation built up (usually both)...

No leaks, but with the clutch pedal all the way engaged, it feels as if it is maybe engaged 10%-50% at times.

Never mind. It was a clutch issue. Clutch went out back in September 2011.
