Sure it is a blown engine or blown transaxle? Driving around in lower gear than usually (high RPMs) generally be harder on the transaxle than the engine, especially with an automatic. With a standard - possible that you could harm the engine.

Short answer - yes, the newer 9th gen Corolla 1ZZ-FE engines will "fit" in the 8th gen Corollas. Being a direct swap is a different matter. This has been discussed at length on the forum, just do a quick search.

Actually you can. I had a '04 to '06 engine replaced into my car. Direct swap just used my stock manifold instead of the plastic one on the newer gens.

Yeah, I should have elaborated - depends on the definition of "direct swap".

Was referring to the intake manifold and DBW throttlebody on the 2005+ Corolla engines. The 1998-1999 8th gen Corollas 1ZZ-FE without VVT-i can use the short block from the later 8th gens and 9th gen Corollas.

The 2000-2002 8th gen Corollas 1ZZ-FE w/VVT-i can use everything save the induction system. Can be modified to fit the cable actuated throttle body variants (2003-2004 9th gen engines), the ones with DBW will have to swap to a cable system, as the 8th gen ECM doesn't understand it.

Now if you are going to swap the wiring and ECM - that is a totally different matter.
