1998 Corolla LE stuck in Neutral

Greetings!

Over the last few months, if my car was on any type of incline, it was really hard to put in park. Of late, I would just put it in neutral to start/stop it. Today when I tried to put it in park (I usually try), the shifter became "loose". Now, no matter where I have the shifter (D, R, 1, 2, N), the car stays in neutral. I can move the shifter without pushing in the button on the side to any gear except R and P. For those, I have to push the button in to move the shifter there, but the car still stays in neutral no matter where it is at. Any ideas?

Ryan

I'm thinking the shift cable from the lever to the transmisson would be the first place I'd look. You may want to check all your motor/tranny mounts as well - a worn / torn mount could explain the incline part.

Could be a torque converter issue. Check your transmission oil (a lack of oil is very damageable on an automatic transmission). It could also be one of the valves (regulator valve, throttle valve, manual valve). You got a check engine light on ?

I took apart the console to see if I could get a better idea of what is happening but this is over my head. I am barely competent with basic stuff so decided better get someone else to look at it. I think this post is very similar to what I am facing but after looking at diagrams and explanations, it just isn't helping. http://www.phpbbserver.com/toyota/vi...&mforum=toyota

Thanks for the help. Will update when I learn what the problem is.

PS, Strangely, no check engine light.
