check engine light

hey guys, this is my first post and i would like to say thanks for all the information i have gotten off this website before i joined. i have a 2001 corolla s and i am getting codes P0171 system too lean bank 1, P0130 O2 circuit bank 1 sensor 1, and P0133 O2 circuit slow response bank 1 sensor1. I am assuming all of these are pointing to the oxygen sensor that is before the cat. Just wanted to get confirmation before i spend 100 on a sensor.

After you replaced your sensor did you disconnect the battery to reset the computer? You should also check your PCV valve. Have you checked the condition of your spark plugs? You could also have a vacuum leak, possibly from the intake manifold gasket or one of the vacuum lines broken/disconnected.

thanks again for the response. I cleared everything with a code reader but did not disconnect the battery. I believe the pcv valve had about a 1 inch hose that goes from the motor to the intake manifold?? checked that hose and didnt looked messed up. Did not check spark plugs. Check engine light did not come back up yet. I can hear a slight whistle from the front of the motor kinda near the alternator, not far from the intake manifold. Could that be an issue?

Yes, whistle seems like a potential leak. Check out this video for a tutorial on using carb cleaner to diagnose a leak:

You should have said you were having drivability problems. You dont know that you wasted your money yet. Wait to see if the codes come back. A bad 02 sensor will not cause the symptoms you describe in this post , but can cause the codes you first described. Sounds like you have more than one problem. Before I replace any part, I test it first , but then I have the tools to do it ,and you may not. The first thing you should do is a tune up.If you dont have a manual and a multimeter you should buy them, otherwise you are just at the mercy of replacing parts.

Well tools and a multimeter I have and am proficient with. My next step is checking for a vacuum leak. After that will be determined by what the leak test reveals.

Vacuum leaks have little effect on wide open throttle, so much air is being pulled through the engine it negates any small leaks ,and if you have a really large leak the car wont idle.

I replaced the front sensor and cleared the codes but my wife just told me today that the light came back on. Even when the light went out, the car ran like crap. So in answer to your question, no problem is not solved yet.
