Engine Swap Issue

Had sludge like so many others. Car is an 01 Corolla with VVT. Swapped in an engine out of an 06 with a supposed 48k on it. Everything went fairly smoothly and everything bolted up nicely. Also used a starter off an 05, just to be sure. Now the engine will turn with the starter about 90 to 180 degrees then freeze. I can manually turn it past this point without much force and then try to start again and it will do the same thing. It seems like every time it gets compression it can't get itself past that point. Anyone else had an issue like this with any of their engine swaps? I can answer questions if more insight is needed.

Thanks

sounds like the starter is weak or batter is weak. maybe bad ground wire or connection. check voltage on battery when it is cranking. does starter get hot?

Well the battery is on the trickle charger right now and I will try it again tomorrow. As for timing I would hope not. Wouldn't that cause issues with the valves actually jamming the rotation of the motor due to being off sync?

This kind of swap has been covered here a few times before and it's now known that you can swap the long block, but need to keep some parts from the old engine (intake, throttle body). I assume this has been done?

Pull the plugs and turn the engine by hand, it should turn easy and feel smooth with no tight spots. Make sure you have a good/charged battery, then with the plugs pulled see if it will turn over. Should crank very easy and fast. This will tell you if you have any mechanical damage/ resistance. Put the plugs back in and crank it , if it still wont turn over , check your starter/ wiring.

I will try this out today. Battery should be charged and the starter is brand new so I'm going to assume that the starter itself shouldn't be an issue.

The engine computer should know the proper firing order. All OP needs to make sure is that the right plug goes into the right coil pack, which due to their location on the harness he can't really go wrong with.

What was wrong with your old starter? When I did my swap, I just reused the old started from my car.

Most likely nothing. Just did it to be sure all was working.
