Amsoil gear oil - 99 Corolla

My local auto parts stores only seem to carry very generic looking gear oil, none of the brands I see talked about here.

However, there are a plethora of Amsoil dealers around here. AND Amsoil sells a handy little pump that fits their quart and gallon bottles.

Amsoil seems to have many types of gear oil in the 75w90 ballpark.

Has anyone here had any luck (good or bad) with Amsoil gear oil?

ps. I thought I could probably get away with anything close, but then I read a thread here that mentioned the concept of "limited slip" which leads me to believe that the gear oil topic may be more complicated than I thought, so here I am asking!

Well gear oil quality is not that important if you compare it to regular engine oil. Gear oil is thick and basic (it does not have that much additives).

Personally, I'd go with Castrol Gear Oil or Mobil1 Gear Oil NOT synthetic. If you however can't get another oil than Amsoil, I would not be affraid to put it in my car, just make sure it's not synthetic.

I thought all Amsoil products were synthetic. I see one of their products that they say is a replacement for conventional gear oil, but it too is synthetic. Its the 6th one down on this page:

So synthetic doesn't work well in these 8th generation Corollas? Or you are not a fan of synthetic gear oil for any car...

Thanks for the reply!!

Amsoil 75w-90 worst gear oil for Toyota

Hi, I changed gear oil on my toyota corolla 2003 only two days ago and I used Amsoil 75w-90. I chose Amsoil as I saw their advertisement at different websites on the internet. They claim that Amsoil is the best in any temperature whereas thats not the case. After oil change the gears are much harder and I have never experienced this before and its not even winter now. Hopefully tomorrow when I have time will replace it with Castrol or Mobile1.

All Amsoil are synthetic. I use Red Line MT-90 in mine, another "haute couture" synthetic. The sign to look for is that the gear oil is, beside 75w-90 viscosity, GL-4 spec. Then you don't need to worry about it for a few good years, 2 at least, maybe 5.
