Positive cable and battery post's corrosion

Hi, need some advice

I need to replace the positive cable, when I went to the parts store they asked about length and whether its 4 or 6 gauge, I know when I replaced the Starter there was a cold weather version I'm thinking that's what the lower gauge positive cable is for, but just checking, should I get the lower gauge anyway for less resistance? also do I cover both entire battery post with petroleum jelly before connecting or just over the clamps once tightened? I have a really bad build up of white corrosion on the post all the time no matter how often I clean it.

Thanks
Ed

Good question !

Well you can apply special grease to prevent further corrosion. You need to put it where the clamps sits, on the clamp and on the pole itself.

You will need to get gauge 4 cable.

I could not find information about the length tho.
