New to the forums and thought I'd ask some questions....

I recently became the owner of a 1998 Corolla VE Automatic with 136,000 on it. I wasn't expecting much but have been pleasantly surprised. I want ask the forum for general advice or things to look out for that someone who's semi knowledgeable about cars, but also just installed his spark plugs without anti-seize.
One particular issue I have that I've checked around for and cannot find any answer to is this:
The car makes a noise like a rattling/vibrating after coming to a stop with brake power. It'll do it in reverse as well. It does not seem to be a break problem. There is a bit of an alignment issue that I need to address next weekend but I have no idea if that would be causing it. It sounds like it's originating from the front passenger's side. The car doesn't drive as if anything's wrong as much as I can tell. It just makes a weird sound while in gear, but stopped.
One advice is keep an eye one your oil levels. With this generation it is a hit and miss that your car will consume oil like it's going out of style.
That vibration noise (rattle sound) could just be you heat shield on the front part of your exhaust. They just become loose and rattle around. I wouldn't fix it if that's the problem. Just wait until your pipes need to be replace to fix that problem it that is indeed the problem.

I had that exact same problem and that's what it turned out to be. The exhaust heat shield. I just crawled underneath it, bent it around a little until it stopped vibrating and I was good to go.
I noticed you changed your spark plugs. On Toyota's you need to make sure to keep with the Japanesse spark plugs. Toyota replacements are Nippondenso, however NGK is a comparable replacement.

So if I just took a pair of vise grips and bent it right to the exhuast at the top part that noise completely goes away?
Over the weekend I swapped out the spark plugs and managed to make a really bad newbie mistake and sheered off two of the spark plug threads from the spark plugs. I was able to recover them using an Easy Out screw extractor with (surprisingly) very little effort. Crisis averted there.
Sounds like I need to grab a jack and some stands to take a look underneath the car and see what's up with the exhaust system to pinpoint that rattle and take care of it. I'll keep posting my progress and share whatever nuggets of knowledge I come across.

Well, it wasn't quite *that* simple. It took some trial and error to get the bend in the right place. That meant bending it a little, going for a ride, coming back, waiting for the exhaust to cool down so I could tweek it again, etc. Eventually, I got the noise to go away.

Hm yea I figured it was kind of a trail and error thing. The annoying part would be to wait for the exhaust to cool down in between runs. But if you say you eventually got it I might try that out this weekend.
It's more of a loud sounds because it's metal hitting metal. Very easy to see. It won't even seem loose in most cases but at the top of the sheild (heading towards the engine block) tap the top of the shield repeativly and you will eventually make that sound you here when your stopped at a light, backing up, or speeding up in some cases.
Wow - haven't seen the threads sheared off of plugs like that in some time. This was when you were installing the plugs - little too much torque? Easy Out saved the day - that is very fortunate - I'd be worried about metal shavings dropping in from above. Had that happen to me on an older build - just a hair too much torque, heat cycles and metal contraction caused the overall torque on the plug to exceed its specs and cause the threads to shear off like that. But in my case, I had to take the head off - couldn't get it any other way.
Also, this generation of Corolla is known for having those exhaust donuts, especially between the exhaust manifold to front pipe (springs bolts there) and between the front pipe and the catalytic converter (clamp there) completely disintegrate over time. Mine is closing in on needing a second set put in - so I'm contemplating replacing the whole exhaust system (original one is badly corroded, muffler is split on the side, all hangers are rotted).

So after some messing around and a lot of listening, I'm starting to think I have pump issue ( power steering possibly ). The noise I'm hearing occurs under these conditions:
-At idle, but in gear ( Reverse, Drive )
-Noise goes away temporarily, (at idle, in gear) when I turn the steering wheel.
-Checked the heatshields in the engine bay and on the bottom up to the cat, and those seem to be fine
-checked all my fluids, all seems well.
-checked for leaks, only found the Power Steering reservoir with a small bit of fluid on the connecting hoses, but after wiping those down, it does not appear to be a leak, just probably spillage.
-when watching the belt, I notice a little bit of shimmy in it coming off the top rear pully next to the head/valve cover but can't readily identify it at the moment.
I'm still working on it as the days go by, trying to narrow it down.
